that other party members don’t have such as not constantly being under the watch of big brother, they can engage in relationships (marriage), and they don’t live in constant fear of the government. They are in control of their own lives unlike the citizens. Winston also believes that the proles have retained some of their humanity that does not exist in the party members.

In 1984, the party wants to take away humanity so all that’s left is undevoted love for the party and big brother. In order, to take away control they manipulate citizens using telescreen, doublethink, and newspeak. “Year by year, and minute by minute, everybody and everything was buzzing upwards.” (Orwell pg.33) The party omits the negatives and the people are only informed with the positive and that’s how they maintain support and power, by deceiving them.
