The world of 1984 is bleak; individualism is utterly suppressed the reign of terror of the Thought Police. In this setting, Orwell's work details the efforts of one individual, Winston Smith, to resist and retain a personal sense of uniqueness. In keeping this goal, Smith places his trust in the hands of O'Brien, a mysterious Inner Party member who ultimately proves Winston's nemesis as an agent of the Thought Police. In the end, Winston is crushed by the state, tortured to the point that he ceases to leave any unique consciousness, and becomes a shell of a man before his execution.

Oceania has no courts or prisons, only the Thought Police and Ministry of Love. The Thought Police serve to help the party maintain the strictest level of orthodoxy among its followers, and further contribute to the loss of juridical rights, for as O'Brien eventually explains to Winston, "The Party is not interested in the overt act: the thought is all we care about" (Orwell 209). The doctrine crimestop indicates the degree to which the definition of crime no longer encompasses action: "Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as thought by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought...(it means) protective stupidity" (175). Citizens, such as Smith, condemn themselves to death merely by doubting, questioning, or dissenting- "The consequences of every act are included in the act itself...
