A Greasy Critique

The theatre program at Rollins College showed up at the Annie Russel Theatre to put on their rendition of Grease. Everyone knows the classic love story of good girl Sandy and bad boy Danny Zuko, especially as they were portrayed in the classic film by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. The actors were well dressed and had good hair. The props were very simple yet intriguing. The songs, performed by a pit orchestra and the actors themselves, were true to the somewhat jumbled storyline. Overall, the play didn�t live up to the expectations that the audiences of this traditional show have upheld for over 30 years, but it was entertaining and sharp. with the built-in fan base. The casting was well done for the most part, except for the Greasers. They really couldn�t even hold a match to the originals. Danny did not give off the bad-ass flair that his hair does. The one Greaser who only said �Hey Frenchie!� was more endearing than any other adjective I can think of. But even though the boys aren�t Greasers in real life, they sure know how to perform. The cast as a whole did very well, but their projection was getting lost in the orchestra. The cast hit their one-liners perfectly on cue, and their lines were recited flawlessly. Sandy was perfectly casted, and had an absolutely resonating voice. Her, Rizzo and Teen Angel were possibly the best casted and lived up to the original with their strong voices. Unfortunately, there was no in-between for the quality of singing. It was either pure, beautiful pitches, or awkward off-key belts and mediocre harmonies.
