What would we do without order intervening in our lives? In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, order is put to the test. Young boys are stranded on an island after a plane crash. No one knows what to do. They are challenged in a way that a usual twelve year old boy would have to go through. They needed a leader, food and shelter. But how can they do that? Something that will help them accomplish everything, which is order. Golding illustrates that order is necessary to survive; the symbols of the conch, the fire and the beast deepen this thought. But Golding doesn't show this as a loss to the children but the openness to evil and savagery within them.
Within the novel, the conch, which can also be called a shell, is repeated throughout. It represents the idea of order itself. While roaming around the island alone while trying to find the others, Ralph and Piggy found the conch. Piggy says, "We can use this to call the others, Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us-"(17). This explains how once the conch is blown, everyone directly comes together without hesitation. Everyone came out of the forest within minutes. This is when everyone meets for the first time. They learn each other's names and get to know everyone. Ralph, who is pronounced chief, uses the conch whenever a meeting is needed or he needs them to behave. This continues until the tribes are separated and everything turns upside down.
