a sick child in the middle of bleak and harsh weather. In the first few sentences, the story states “The world had been sad since Tuesday" (Marquez 214). Quickly though a more "magical" element is introduced. An old man with enormous wings. Just as quickly, all ideas of powerful and holy angels are destroyed by placing him face down in the mud and unable to extricate himself. He adds a weak but wise trope to forward this new idea of angels.

With a slight hint of irony, the very elements that should have allowed this man to fly above the elements instead trapped him and gave him no end of outcasted attention. This tone is everywhere in the story. An example is the wise old woman who concluded that the old man with wings was, in fact, an angel but then suggested clubbing him to death.

In parts of the story, the author’s tone bears a feeling of regret that humanity, as a whole, fails to appreciate the amazing factors that are naturally apart of our lives. Instead of ...
