I was six years old in the grocery store with my mother crying my eyes out. It was not because I could not get the chips or candy I would have liked but something more devastating that would eventually change my entire life forever. On that day I found out I was adopted, not in the comfort of my home but in Winn Dixie surrounded by twenty or more strangers. That was more than any six year old could handle. need to be loved, cared for and made to feel safe and wanted in their environment. In my case, my biological mother�s parents did not approve of the race of my father. My mother was Caucasian and my father African- American. My mother went against her own judgment and put her baby up for adoption solely based on her parent�s opinion of someone outside their own race. Prejudice is still around even though people want to sweep it under the rug. Children only know one side of their families because the other does not approve of the color of their skin; whether it is their own flesh and blood or not.
It is difficult not knowing who or where you came from. I cannot speak for all adopted children but I felt unwanted. It�s hard to trust people when all your life you were lied to by the people you thought were your parents. How could you expect someone of any age to be able to accept it positively?
