The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is believed to be one of the most controversial texts in American literature. Twain makes an effort not to leave any institution unscathed by his satirical prods. Specifically, Twain satirizes Christianity as well as Southern aristocracy throughout the text.
Mark Twain uses literary techniques such as satire to portray the misuse of Christianity and its values. Christianity is brought up in many instances throughout the novel. Another instance where Twain satirizes the misuse of Christian values is the idea of anti superstition. Christianity takes a dim view of superstition. However, the two main characters of the book are both superstitious. Huck and Jim are both held up to be respected and emulated. By Twain making them superstitious, superstition is therefore honored and something to emulate. In Chapter one, a spider crawls up Huck�s shoulder so Huck immediately flicks it off and it lands in the flame of a candle. The spider shrivels up before he is able to get it out in time. According to superstition, killing a spider brings bad luck.
