HISTORY OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION


The government called for affirmative action the first time in 1961 when President John Kennedy issued executive order #10925. Its mission was to end discrimination in employment by the government and its contractors. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 broadened the application by being subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. The United States Supreme Court Case of Brown vs. Board of education of Topeka, Kansas also had a huge impact.
