Los Angeles, although known for its beautiful beaches and massive skyscrapers, is also home to traffic congestion and racial/ethnic tendencies. In the book, Always Running, the author, Luis Rodriguez, uses many structural elements that contribute greatly to how the story is told. His use of pace, backstory, flashback and foreshadow are some of the most contributing elements to the story as a whole. In this book, the main character Luis tell his coming of age story in gangs, drugs, sex; but also a story of redemption, a story of how he changed his life from chaos to focus on becoming a better person.

Every tale needs to have some sort of story behind it to premise the main plot; Luis’ use of his back story in the very beginning has a profound impact to the story. Knowing of the background of a character allows the reader to make assumptions/opinions about the person right off out of the start of the book. In the beginning, Luis is traveling with his family to the airport to get out of the country; (for quote, see previous paragraph).
