American History X: The Reaction

I can start off by saying this film has most definitely made an impact on me and the way I perceive Neo-Nazis, and the way they interpret multi-ethnic integration. The film had certain unexpected points that I would have come to in my own thinking without certain hints. The hints were all small parts of the film that were quite direct and vivid.
It does a great job at presenting American racial tension in its most classic and historical context: Dark skin vs. light skin.
The film goes back and forth through the lives of Derek and Danny Vinyard, two boys from Venice Beach, California who grow up in what seems like a somewhat ethnically challenged family and community. Derek was an ...

who happens to be Jewish, Derek is alerted that night by Danny that his truck is being broken into by two black men. This is the key event of Derek�s violence towards blacks.
After Derek is alerted of the burglars, he immediately grabs a loaded gun, runs downstairs, and confronts them. He then shoots down two men killing one and injuring another. He then, in front of his brother, forces the injured man to put his head on the curb, and kills him with a curb kick. Derek is then arrested and incarcerated for three years.
While in prison Derek joins the Aryan Brotherhood in order to stay safe with his own kind. Later on a series of events takes place that leads to his change of thinking towards blacks. He is forced to work alongside a black inmate in the laundry room of the prison, and is then assaulted in the shower by the other Aryan Brothers. One could see how there would be big holes and pieces that don�t fit in Derek�s mind after these occurrences.
