American Psycho is an interesting film for many reasons, and one of them links in with what genre it actually fits in. American Psycho has elements of a black comedy, but also elements of horror.A black comedy is humour that makes light of otherwise serious situations. It is also reffered to as Adult humour as the humour is mostly understood by adults rather than children. American Psycho uses a lot of black comedy, esepcially in the scene where Patrick Bateman kills Paul Allen. This movie that Bateman's mind is taking us through has ridiculous moments & elements that makes it funny.

American Psycho also explores the 80's yuppie culture very deeply. The main character, Patrick Bateman can be described as a typical 80's yuppie man. The acronym YUPPIE is derived from its root YUP, which stands for Young Urban Professional. Yuppies are ridiculed for their eye-catching personal expenditure and hunger for social status among their peers. Bateman fits the category well. One of the first scenes of the film features a sequence of shots that show Bateman going through his morning routine. He is shown placing an ice mask on his face, doing exercises, taking a shower & applying a facial mask. All these things are done to make him loook good on the outside & help gain a good social status amongst his peers.
