An Analysis Of Fukuyama�s �The End Of History�



Francis Fukuyama contends that liberal democracy marks the end of history. By this he contends that there does not exist another political structure which can best serve all of humanity. For him, liberal democracy is the final stage in Hegel�s dialectic and will consequently spread throughout the world�s political systems.
How will this political system spread? Fukuyama contends that the force that inevitable leads to a liberal democracy is that of economic activity, namely the common free market. Is Fukuyama correct? Is Liberal Democracy the final and most perfect stage in Hegel�s dialectic? Marx would have to disagree. First off, Marx would say that many people misinterpret his writings. This was the case in the formation of the communist system of government in China and Russia. He would say that communism should never have been implemented in China nor Russia. The reason being, Marx said that communism would rise out of a fully developed and capitalistic nation. When China and Russia were made Communist their economies had not even come close to reaching that level. Consequently, Marx would say that Fukuyama could not support his argument using the examples of China and Russia because they in fact did not follow the dialectic proposed by Marx.
