The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the short story "Intensive Care," by Lee Smith. Specifically, it will answer the questions: What do you think Lee Smith's position is on the question, "Is Harold a good man?" Why? How is he a good man if his friends say he isn't? In the final accounting, only we know if we are good are bad, and the judgments of others are just that - judgments and not always truths. "set out single-mindedly to marry him" (Smith 770), so Harold really has had very little control over his own life. It is not surprising that he would finally rebel, and leave his family for a woman most people find unsuitable. Harold's whole life has been planned out, and for once, he made his own decision.
If anything, Cherry, and his love for Cherry, brings out the best in him. He really talks to her, and more importantly, she really listens. "Harold had never had so much to say" (Smith 782). Harold has so much to say because he is finally being himself, not what everyone else wants and expects him to be. Harold has not had much time to be himself, he is too busy acting like the prosperous businessman - playing golf with his friends, living a highly regimented life like his wife, Joan.
