The Donkey Who Wanted to Belong

There was a donkey that had all the freedom in the world. He could stay up late, eat whatever he wanted and go wherever he chose.

He was very lonely because he never had anyone to play with and no one to go home to. One day, while roaming around town, the donkey looked in a window and saw a man.

The man had a little dog, and he was very fond of it. He would pat its head, and take it on his knee, and talk to it. Then he would give it little bits of food from his own plate.

"Why does he not make a pet of me?" said the donkey.

"It is not fair. I work hard, and the dog only wags its tail, and barks, and jumps on its man's knee. It is not ...

To have total independence over yourself seems to be a life goal for every human being. Being able to take care of yourself and not rely on another is the life people strive for. When you are a child, all you can think about is getting out of your parents� house. No more chores, no more curfews, no more rules, etc. Despite this intriguing freedom, to know that you belong somewhere is truly a blessing. The need to belong colors our thoughts and emotions. We spend a great deal of time thinking about our actual and hoped-for relationships. When relationships form, we often feel joy. Falling in mutual love, people can�t help but to smile from ear to ear. The message in my story is to show young children (boys especially) that although independence and total freedom is desired and strived for, belonging to something bigger than yourself, ...
