Antigone: Creon


In the tragic play Antigone, written by Sophocles, Creon is a very stubborn person, who always believes he is right in decision making. He is the leader of Thebes and if his ways continue Thebes will be a very unhappy place. It will be an unhappy place because a leader who ignores the requests and demands of his people is destined to fail.
The actions Creon presents prove that he is an independent leader. For example, he decides to kill Antigone even though the townspeople believe that she did a good deed and shouldn�t be punished. Only later does Creon realize that because of his harsh punishment for Antigone, he causes three lives to be taken away. And for the rest of his life he has ...

how Polyneices� punishment had no purpose because he was already punished since he was dead. Creon strongly disagreed with Tiresias and got angry when Tiresias said, ��He is a fool, a proved and stubborn fool�� (p.237). The comments concerning Creon all prove that he is a foolish leader.
During Creon�s life his views on things change and his conscience finally comes into place in the end. Talking to Haemon about dictatorship regarding Antigone, Creon says, �Do I rule this state, or someone else?� (p.223). This means that he is the only one whose opinion matters in decision regarding Thebes. Once tragedy strikes, Creon looks upon others for advice. He asks the Leader about the Antigone situation, �To do what? Tell me, I shall listen� (p.240). Creon later realizes that he is trouble and doesn�t always know the right answers so he seeks for advice. Creon comes to the conclusion that his decisions need to be in the best interests of his people.
