Antigone: Summary


Antigone begins as Antigone and Ismene talk about their brothers' deaths in the war. The one brother, Eteocles, was buried with great military honors, whereas the other brother, Polyneces, was left in the field to rot. Antigone was angered by this and was determined to bury him, even though the penalty was death by stoning. Antigone asked Ismene, her sister, for help with the burial, but Ismene refused.
The next day a servant passing by noticed that someone, in an attempt to bury the corpse, had sprinkled dust over it. After a debate the servant decided to tell the king, Creon. The news frustrated Creon and he demanded to know who did this. A sentry admitted that he was a witness and ...

Antigone - Haimon's fianc� and daughter of the former king.

Ismene - Antigone's sister.

Creon - King of Thebes and Antigone's uncle.

Eurydice - Haimon's mother and Creon's wife

Haimon - Antigone's fianc� and the son of Creon and Eurydice.

Setting -

Antigone mostly takes place in Creon's castle in Thebes.

Conflict -

In the play Antigone two main types of conflict occur, internal and external.
An internal conflict occurs when the servant sees the corpse sprinkled with dust. He must decide whether or not to tell the king. If he does decide to tell the king he runs the risk of being accused of the crime.
There is one main type of external conflict present in the play. This type of conflict is person vs. person. An example of this is when Creon and Haimon quarrel over Antigone's deed. Creon feels that what she did deserved the death penalty, whereas ...
