Artist Zhang Huan chooses to call his series "Cowskin Buddha Face" because it allows him to make a personal connection to his childhood while also conveying the umbrella theme behind Buddhism. Firstly, raised in the rural Henan province, Zhang Huan's childhood was filled with vivid animals, including the oxen. The medium is not only used for its uniqueness in the art world, but also allows Zhang Huan to relate back to his humble origins. Formally, I felt that the artists used a variety of principles and elements of art that helped him develop a highly stylized sculpture that is aesthetically appealing. Although it can be perceived as a simple piece, the author uses this artwork to express his emotions, therefore successively being expressionistic.
