Bacterial Meningitis

Meningitis is inflammation of the meningies in the brain and spinal cord. Three specific layers make up the meninges: the dura matter, arachnoid, and pia matter; each has a specific important role to play but overall they act as a cushion for the brain. Without them, insignificant bumps on the head, or even a mild shaking of the head back and forth, would result in a state of unconsciousness. The dura matter is the outer most layer. This layer is composed of strong, dense fibrous tissue. Its main function is protection and supports the large venous channels (dural sinuses) carrying blood from the brain toward the heart. Meningitis bacteria are cocci-shaped chains that are gram positive. It can occur anywhere and to anyone. There is no specific area or region with immunity to this disease. Infants, teenagers, and elderly are the most susceptible to meningitis. Infants and elderly have weaker immune systems, and it is common among teens to share drinks, which is one way the bacteria is spread. Close contact such as sneezing, coughing, kissing and sharking drinks are ways meningitis is passed on from one person to another. Once the bacterium is transferred, it resides in the respiratory system. It then travels to the brain via bloodstream where is releases toxins that cause the meninges to become inflamed.
