In the beginning of this story we see the general store was turned into a court room where the Justice of the Peace is sitting at the table. In the back of the room we find a young boy, Colonel Sartoris �Sarty� Snopes, crouched on a nail keg hoping he will not have to testify in the arson case his father faces. Young Sarty knew his father was guilty of the crime, but he still didn�t want to testify against him. Sarty perceives the judge as benevolently, but nonetheless the judge is the family�s enemy.
