I felt shock and some nausea reading Kevin Bales' Because She Looks like a Child. What really stood out to me was that brokers and agents buying girls for brothels were equally likely to be male or female, respected in their society due to their large cash payments, and even have been former sex slaves themselves. Given the way Siri's condition is described, I can't imagine what kind of need forces a former sex slave into recruiting young girls for what she once did. primary motivation is economic gain, women's rights get trampled and women themselves become objectified or abused. Given the context of the average rural household's income, and that a sold daughter can provide a sum of money equal to a year's income, the sex trade grows more understandable, but the incredible human cost that Bales describes, with former slaves suffering what seems to be PTSD, with the violence and brutality of it all, makes the whole thing hard to swallow. It seems like the ideal of sex portrayed in Because She Looks like a Child is that it is a social activity to go to a brothel, to have sex with a nymphet and to leave, but the reality of it is an industry driven by hypocrisy and money, resulting in diseases like HIV and mental disorders and broken young women and girls.
