Benedict Arnold
The name has become a synonym for a traitor to one's country. In the first years of the American Revolution, however, Arnold was a brilliant and dashing general, highly respected for his service to the patriot cause. He distinguished himself in several battles, reached the rank of major general, and was considered one of General Washington's most trusted officers.
Arnold was born on January 14, 1741, in Norwich, Connecticut. Both his parents were of families that were established and respected in New England. On September 19th, they sailed for the Kennebec River from Newburyport on eleven schooners, and on the twentieth, they camped on Swan Island in Merrymeeting Bay.
