Beowulf: A Man Of Many Values
In the epic poem, Beowulf, a monster named Grendel has been
invading Heorot, a communal mead hall, and has been killing and devouring
the Geat warriors. As their only way to end this massacre, the Geats
asked Beowulf to defeat this monstrous beast. He was successful in doing
this and in the meantime killed Grendel�s mother, although it was of
greater challenge. Then, Beowulf, after ruling the Geats peacefully for
fifty years, faced even a greater challenge: He was relied on by his
people to defeat a dragon that was very fierce and formidable. Not only
was the dragon a dominant obstacle, but Beowulf was handicapped by age.

value was essential for a warrior to be successful. While other men were
too frightened and intimidated by Grendel, Beowulf showed no fear toward
his challenges. While Grendel was a supernatural destructive force,
Beowulf discarded this notion and fought with all his might. After easily
destroying Grendel, Beowulf was then faced by Grendel�s mother, even a
greater force. Once again, Beowulf demonstrates his bravery by showing
great courage in his battle...�with Hrunting I shall set glory, or death
will take me.� The previous passage is an example of the warrior�s
bravery; he would rather die than not defeat Grendel�s mother. While
fighting Grendel�s mother, Beowulf was forced to swim in the burning lake
(the home of Grendel and his mother) for hours. This seemed impossible

without the assistance of anyone else and without weapons. Grendel
commits his destruction unarmed; therefore, Beowulf will face the monster
in the same way, thus allowing a fair and just match. Additionally,
Beowulf was miraculously able to swim in the bubbling and churning lake
for hours while fighting Grendel�s mother. As Beowulf is dragged down to
the bottom of the lake by Grendel�s mother, he realizes that Hrunting (his
