There are moments in our lives when we stare into the mirror and the reflection we see portrays a shocking reality. The person who stares back is a complete stranger, lost in the darkness of fear and disappointment. The shock comes in realizing that you have become that stranger. The moment you realize you have become lost, is the moment your rediscovery begins.

As time went on things began to change. His priorities began to shift. No longer were his wife and kids his main focus. His presents at home began to decrease over a period of time. The moments he was home were consumed by fighting and drinking. In an attempt to defuse his anger, I allowed him to treat me disrespectfully. This inspired him to talk to me as if I were a child he could command. From there the insults progressed and became spiteful. His continuous accusations of promiscuity rang through my ears on a daily basis. The constant reminders of my mistakes thrown in my face weakened what little bit of self-respect I had. The longer I stayed, the more his words became my truth and the hatred for myself deepened. I began to doubt that I could be someone that could be loved and appreciated.
