"1984" is a political novel by George Orwell that, when written in 1949, took place in the not so distant future. The main focus of the novel is how society can fall under the rule of a single power, and lose the freedom they once had. "Big Brother" is for the most part the leader of Oceania, where the story takes place, and everyone is supposed to love him.
"Big Brother" is the leader of the "Party", which is the political group that the population of Oceania is ruled by. Posters of Big Brother are put up all over Oceania, mostly the posters read "Big Brother is watching you!" and there is a picture of a large face. they are. In every room of almost every building there is a Telescreen which allows Part members to see and hear anything that goes on in the area of the telescreen. Knowing that anything they say, think or do is being seen by the "Big Brother" people will began to believe and think what they are told is the truth, if they do not, they are tortured until they do. Big Brother is used, in my opinion, to scare the people of Oceania. He is seen as a very powerful person (even if he isn't real) and people know what will happen if they disobey him. The Party wants everyone to have the same morals and beliefs, Big Brother scares that into everyone.
Even though 1984 is a fictional novel, I feel that Big Brother could take over in America. When I first saw this question I thought that it was a ridiculous idea to think that something like this could happen in America, the land of the free, where no two people have the same ideas and beliefs.
