Introduction

I am going to share some information with you that you may or may not already know. As most of you have heard or even watched George Lucas's latest film Red Tails, which depicted the courageous Tuskegee Airmen, reminding us of the often overlooked role that African Americans played in past wars and their noble achievements. While most people know about the Tuskegee Airmen, very few of us understand how important 3 women were to their existence. I want to share who these women are today.

Educator, a civil rights leader, Head of the National Council of Negro Women, and establishing a school for African American students in Daytona Beach, FL which later became known as Bethune-Cookman University. The New Deal's Civilian Pilot Training was modestly funded the National Youth Administration (NYA)- which Mary Bethune headed the "Negro Section" of the NYA. She was the only female member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "black Cabinet" and a very close friend with the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. She fought very hard and lobbied the President to resist the demands of the Southern Wing Democratic Party, which was trying to maintain segregation, especially in the military. Since the new program was training 20,000 college students a year as civilian pilots, Bethune realized, this was the key to integrating the U.S. Army's Air Corps during the coming wars, by getting the government to open training programs on the campuses of historically black colleges and ...
