Both attitudinal and institutional racism grossly intertwined in U.S. society and government finally led to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960�s. Depicted above is just one of the many organized forces demanding equality and respect for Blacks in America and world-wide. This particular group, the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, was organized by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton. With the aid of Huey P. Newton�s legal background, the Black Panthers legally demanded the end of racism and class oppression based on Constitutional rights. the Panthers pictured above, favored peaceful means of achieving equality unless violence was necessary for defense. The lists of courageous men and women who struggled for equality can be quite long. However, it is obvious that the picture of the Panthers lack the presence of women. This failure to acknowledge women in the Panther picture represents the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. With a few exceptions, African American women generally do not receive the credit they deserve for their impact in the 1960�s Civil Rights Movement.
When thinking about the most famous civil rights activists of the 1960�s the number of famous male participants outnumbers the comparatively minute number of famous female participants. Generally the female activists lie in the shadows of their male counterparts such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, and El-Hajj Malik Shabazz (Malcolm X).
