Blood Brothers Review

In this review I am going to discuss a performance of the musical Blood Brothers by Willy Russell that I saw at the Pheonix Theatre in London's West End during October 2010.

I was aware of the plot but did not know what to expect, and therefore was interested to see how it would be played out. Briefly the story is about twins who were separated and have different upbringings and family circumstances. They become close friends without realising they are related, infact becomingg Blood Brothers. The story charts their lives, as well as the mother's struggles and ends with tragic consequences. In Blood Brothers when the characters are younger they are downstage and the adults are upstage, to help suggest height differences. On a practical level, my main observation is that I was surprised that the height of the set and the angle of the slope was higher upstage than downstage was not used to better advantage. For example, if I was involved in this production I would have tried to be downstage when playing the younger character when engaged in dialogue with an older character to emphasise the age and the height differences. In most plays or musicals where a character is a child, they are usually played by younger adults or children. However, I feel Willy Russell is trying to give the actors a chance to display their versatility, as this seems to be a tradition of Blood Brothers to have adult actors depicting all the different ages.
