Blood in Macbeth

Blood flows through veins and keeps its organism alive. Whether from the slice of a knife or the prick of a rose thorn, blood often manages to reach the surface in our life. Its bold, bright color makes it and its impact in life instantly visible. In William Shakespeare�s The Tragedy of Macbeth, the word blood symbolizes life and guilt, and is used literally as the red liquid that it is.
Blood symbolizes guilt multiple times throughout the play. Characters speak of blood while talking or thinking about the wrongs they have committed. Macbeth says, �Will all great Neptune�s oceans wash this blood from my hand? No; this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine.�(2.2 59-60). ...

one feeling guilty, as Lady Macbeth begins to show her regret. She is seen sleep walking, trying to wash blood off her hands. She eventually commits suicide, as the guilt has driven her to that point.
While blood is a symbol of guilt more than once in the play, it is also used as a symbol of life. Blood, outside of this play, is quite often used to symbolize life. People might say, �There is new blood here tonight.� They mean, �There is a new person here tonight.� After the discovery of Duncan�s murder, Macbeth says to Duncan�s two sons, �The spring, the head, the fountain of your blood is stopped� (2.3 95-97). When Macbeth says, �The fountain of your blood is stopped�, he is saying the source where your life came from is gone. Blood here symbolizes the life of Duncan and his descendants.
With blood being a symbolic piece of the play, it is used numerously throughout the play. From when Duncan states, �What bloody man is that?�(1.2 Line 1), blood is constantly being used. ...
