Book Review: Mama Might Be Better Off Dead: The Failure of Health Care in Urban America

In Laurie Abrahams� book she follows an African American family living in inner city Chicago for one year to explicitly detail their struggles with the American health care system. The focal points of the story are Jackie who is the main caregiver to Mrs. Jackson her mother who suffers from a myriad of problems diabetes being her main condition and Robert her husband who suffers from renal disease and subsequent failure. These three characters poorly interact with the health care system in their North Lawdale area in a way that makes you cry for change. Most importantly their problem is not one of their own but one born out of the idea of cultural competence or lack thereof.
