�Buddhist Economics�


�He tends to count nothing as an expenditure, other than human effort...�,
this quote was used to describe the way a French political philosopher
characterized �Western man�. Bertrand de Jouvenel goes on to say, �He does
not seem to realize at all that human life is a dependent part of an
ecosystem of many different forms of life.� I strongly agree with both of
these assumptions in most cases.

I thought this essay was well written and gave many strong points. I
believe modern economists take many things for granted, even more so modern
Americans. Unlike the Buddhists most Americans have little or no regard

agree. In this essay they also commented that �simplicity and non-violence�
are closely related. I agree with that belief as well. I liked how E.F.
Schumacher explained the importance of consumption and how it effects
pressures put on society. Although people in less industrialized countries
have greater worries like poverty, they don�t have as much of a problem
with violence. Things are more low key and Buddhists are more focused on
the importance of human character, and they believe that human character is
formed by man�s work.

I think Americans are lazy because as stated in Schumachers essay, �to work
is to make sacrifice of one�s leisure and comfort, and wages are a kind of
compensation for the sacrifice.� I know that almost anyone would rather be
playing golf or on vacation than working, and who could blame them; but as
Americans most of us do not have to work by the sweat of our brow. A lot
of Americans maintain jobs in which they push buttons and watch dials, ...
