Chapter 1:Buck, half - St. Bernard, half - Scotch Shepherd puppy, stays in Judge Miller's house, a rich guy with a beautiful home located in Santa Clara Valley. He is unaware of the brewing trouble facing "any muscular tidewater dog with wet, long fur, from Puget Sound to San Diego." The finding of yellow metal in the Arctic involved the use of young, toiling puppies, and consequently dependent on their fuzzy coats as insulation against the extreme cold. As noted, Buck is a king in the role of Judge Miller, living peacefully and ruling all in the house, even humans.

man, however, in a red sweater who threateningly beats him with a club anytime he attempts to attack -- until he knows his location. More dogs arrive and Buck sees them in the same man's hands as they suffer the domination he suffered. He knows that odd people often come in to purchase the puppies, and is often pleased that he is not often part of the draw. Nevertheless, his day eventually arrives and Perrault, a little poor guy who talks broken English and several other odd tongues, gets priced at three hundred bucks. He is shipped from there, in the company of Curly, a good-natured Newfoundland, and two other puppies, on a vessel called Narwhal. For every day that passes he thinks the weather is getting colder.
