What compels a man to think of today�s society with open eyes, and actually allow him to visualize change? Voltaire achieved this as he wrote Candide. In this novel Voltaire mocks the problems of his everyday surroundings by pointing them out in a way that is both humorous and to the point. He uses a main character (Candide) that represents the everyday person during that time; he also uses a set of characters that represent everyday people and how their actions can influence the everyday man in either a positive or negative way. He then shows how the everyday man encounters these influences and how it helps him become a more prescient person.

when Candide is faced with his true love�s brother. In this scene the brother is outraged that Candide has expressed his love toward his sister due to his unworthiness, and this is the outcome: ��at the same time he stuck him across the face with the flat of his sword, Candide instantly drew his own sword and plunged it to the hilt in the Jesuit baron�s belly� Candide takes these encounters and allows them to educate him on how to live his life. By the end of this story he says a key line which proves he has achieved higher self-awareness due to all the encounters he has faced when he states, �we must cultivate our garden.� Although this doesn�t go with the philosophy of optimism, Candide is not pessimistic. The theme underlying all the persiflage and fantasy is this: If you want a better world, get off your rear and do something about it, even if it is as simple as cultivating your garden.
