Elena is a 17-year-old second generation Mexican-American female. She is now a junior at a local Catholic high school and is seeking counseling for her indecision over college. For Elena, although she wants to apply to college, her mother is terminally ill and expects her to stay with and take care of her. She expressed feeling "down" and "pressured" regarding this conflict over what she should do after graduation. one of Elena's core belief about the world is "nobody can understand me." With this core belief, she came up with some automatic thoughts, such as "they (her family) hear what they want to hear," "they (her friends) don't listen to me," and "he (her boyfriend) thinks that my parents are stupid and ignorant." Moreover, Elena's core belief about the future is "I am destined for failure." As a consequence, her automatic thought is "if I stay with my family my whole life, I'll loose all my potential," and that "if I choose to go to college, I will be a bad daughter."
Beneath Elena' automatic thoughts, some obvious thinking errors exist as follows. Firstly, Elena has a thinking error of catastrophizing. For example, Elena thinks if she makes one wrong move, she is going to end up just like her older sister. She is going to be a total failure and a bad daughter.
