In today's society, there are many forms of discrimination...ageism, ablesim, racism, sexism, etc. According to ABC News, there is even a term used to describe discrimination against fat people; it's called �weight-ism.� The list goes on and on. As a 31 year old, bipolar, fat female and former CNA with two white children and two half-black children, I have experienced and/or witnessed each one of these �isms� in my lifetime. No one of them is any nicer than the next, as each of these are terms used to describe discrimination against someone based upon something they cannot change.

I have seen these same professionals speak to their elderly patients as if they are children, sometimes speaking in front of them to a family member without even acknowledging their presence in the room. Some elderly people are treated as if they don't matter. Many people, even professionals, assume that elderly people are confused, absent-minded, disoriented, obstinate, etc. If a 35 year old patient were to enter a skilled nursing facility to recover from surgery, every effort would be made by the nursing staff to make sure that patient was well taken care of. That patient's needs would be promptly met. In that same skilled nursing facility, down the hall, a 75 year old permanent resident might be ignored so the nursing staff could meet the needs of the 35 year old. asked during the interview was how I would be able to relate to the children I would be working with. Due to the nature of the position, I felt it would be appropriate to share my experience living with bipolar disorder, as I have had to deal, firsthand, with emotional problems on a day to day basis in my own life. I did not get the job. As a matter of fact, when I asked the supervisor who interviewed me why I didn't get the job, she advised me that their company does not hire persons with a mental disability.
