The legal drinking age in any country defines the age at which an individual is permitted to consume alcohol. Some may argue that the legal drinking age in Ontario is to high, or quite possibly too low. In this case however, the main argument is that the legal drinking age in Ontario is too high and should be lowered to 18. The positive reasons why the drinking age should change will be examined in depth, discussing the different benefits in the society. If teenagers were allowed to purchase alcohol, the big companies selling the alcohol would benefit greatly and bring in more income, which would essentially benefit the government by giving them more money from the taxes that would be adding up (Naik, 2010). Although the legal purchase age is 19 years of age, the majority of teenagers under this age consume alcohol but in an irresponsible manner. This is because drinking by these youth is seen as a badge of rebellion against authority and a symbol of adulthood. It seems the more the laws pull on the leash of young adults the more they rebel. If the drinking age were lowered, however, it would be legal for 18 year olds to drink and would most likely end up helping to lower irresponsible drinking rates (Shackner, 2007).
