The book also approaches subjects such as generosity of spirit, importance of memory, and social justice. This can be seen clearly when the ghost of Marley reminds Scrooge that "Mankind was his business", while Scrooge himself can only see his business as a financial obligation in order to succeed in life. After his death, Marley had learned that "business" is not only one's financial obligations, but mankind itself. Mankind in general is not only his business, but also Scrooges and everyone else's business, too.

Regardless of Scrooge being so harsh on them, they cannot wish him any harm, instead nothing but a merry Christmas.
