Salinger, and Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, all contained evidence of internal and external forces that affected the manner in which the characters� lives were lived. The influences of family, society, isolation, and psychological disturbance were personified by the main figures in each novel. Celie, in The Color Purple, had poor self-esteem. Salinger�s Franny was faced with the expectation of others that she succeed to the level of her genius brothers as well as to fit in with society. She strove to feel normal and integrated in the abnormal world in which she was raised. All four characters were confronted with internal conflicts of the self and external pressures of the outside world.
Celie grew up in a poverty stricken environment where education was not available to her. She always had the desire to be educated, as were the white women of her community. Because of her race, however, she was denied the same rights and opportunities that were granted to whites. This deprivation caused Celie painful internal conflict.
