Isaac Perlmutter and Guido both have kids that they love, and in order to protect them with the best of their abilities, they sacrifice their own safety and risk their lives. Isaac knows Syvia is in danger of being sent to a concentration camp after they are told "All Jewish children/ must report to the train station/for deportation/immediately."(Roy 63). Papa does whatever he can to keep Syvia safe. So when the Nazis came around one night, Syvia and him escape to a cemetery where "Papa works quickly,/scooping and tossing,/until there was a shallow hole[...] (71).
