Shakespeare was great and well read for numerous reasons. One of those reasons is his ability to capture the human spirit, the good and the bad. Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy in which Don John schemes his mischievous self through the play providing comedy relief. Iago, in Othello, is a much more developed character. He seems more three-dimensional than Don John.

as Hero to stage an encounter that will bring Hero's virtue into question. Claudio falls for the ruse and denounces Hero at the altar. Friar Francis helps her, hiding her away and enlisting the aid of Leonata, who announces that his daughter has died of grief from the proceeding.
Iago too causes trouble in a romance but his is spurned by revenge. He actually gets Othello to question his loving wife's faithfulness. Iago seeks revenge because Certes was promoted to Othello's chief officer and Iago thought that job belonged to him.
Don John on the other hand is just simply a horrible person. He even says, "I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in his grace; and it better fits this blood." (I.iii.75). He tells the readers that basically he is a jerk.
