INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze two pieces of art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Specifically, it will analyze a Japanese work of art, "The Old Plum," and compare it with a European work of art, "Woman Bathing," that borrows the style and manner of seeing the world that is unique to the Japanese artist. panels (called fusuma); and is 68-3/4 inches high. The width of one panel is 45-11/16 inches, and the width of the entire piece is 15 feet 11-1/8 inches. The artist used ink, color, and gold leaf on paper to create this stunning piece, which makes it even more amazing that the screen has lasted in such good condition for so long. There is some discoloration in the corners of the piece, but the overall condition is excellent. If Sansetsu did indeed create the piece, it was probably done in 1647 or so, and it illustrates how the artist began to use abstract and unconventional tendencies that would later translate into the Impressionist movement in Europe. In fact, the French art critic and writer, Theodore Duret once wrote, "'The Japanese were the first and most perfect Impressionists'" (Lake and Maillard 92).
