Readers understand right away that the summer has a tremendous amount of significance to the central character (narrator) of the story. On the first page of the story, in the first paragraph, summer is symbolized by a new pair of swimming trunks. The season for learning how to swim is here. The season of summer has so many things to offer, "...its lovely outside" tells a story within a story.
Summer is the smile after the frown of winter, and a smile comes to a single man's face when he sees two women sunbathing in bikini bathing suits. But, though the sentence started out with how "terrible" the winter had been, before the sentence is over, it ends with: "...but it's getting warmer now."
