Abstract

For a close and accurate comparison of Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The Rhodora" and Wordsworth's poems of "Expostulation and Reply" and "The Tables Turned", a two stages analysis is conducted. In the first stage the poems are explained and analyzed one by one and a poetic comparison between them is exhibited. In the second stage, the philosophical ideas behind each of the poems and biograpical influences of the authors on their works is explained.

an "extended sonnet" (in coparison with 14 lines of sonnets). In the first 8 lines we can see the situation of the rhodora clearly. Although, the title is rhodora and it is expected to find a fully detailed discription of the flower, but the poem asks a very definitive question which is about the origin of the rhodora. So, the poem can be sliced into two parts,explanation and answer.

The second 8 line brings rhodora to life as an act of personification and asks about its purpose and originality. As we can see in "if eyes were made for seeing, Then beauty is its own excuse for Being", every "Being" has an "excuse" or as a matter of fact a reason for its Being. The Wisdom behind such creation, from which the sages take their intuitive knowledge, is an entity called "self-same power". There isn't the word God in this poem but rather a symbolic image of him. This "self-same power" puts purpose for everything in the world and act of bringing the speaker and rhodora to each other ...
