War is long over and slavery of black people has ended, the idea of black people being below white people is still very prevalent. There is a specific, strict class system in Maycomb, in which all black people are below white people, no matter what. This is how it has always been, this is the tradition, so when it comes to changing the town's racist views the people are reluctant and frightened. To preserve the `norm' and standard tradition, they act unfairly, and sentence Tom Robinson to death where substantial evidence was provided that he was innocent. Even though the jury knew he was innocent, they sentenced him because they were afraid of what would happen if the word of a black man was believed over the word of a white man's. This shows that the tradition is to be prejudice and racist and the conflict is created when the black man's word is the truth.
