Are crime rates the highest they've ever been or does crime appear to be at an all-time high because of social media and 24-hour news networks being such a prevalent source of news? There are violent videos all over the internet of people committing crimes, police brutality, etc. Seeing so many videos has led many people to believe that the crime rate is high and increasing exponentially, but, in reality that isn't the case. In the last 25 years, the surge of crime and violence has simply receded. Crime is roughly half of what it was at its highest in 1991. fact that media reporting on individual crimes yields a persistently depressing pool of downbeat news. Each reported crime produces a story that's startling enough to shape our perceptions. The sad fact is that none of the news outlets tell us about the larger trends. It is better for their ratings to disregard the truth about the significant decrease in crime and focus instead on the horrifying stories that scare the public, but hard data informs us that there's been a remarkable decline in crime.
Experts have generated a multitude of theories to explain the crime rates lowering, none of which hold up under scrutiny. A few hypotheses offered for the decrease in crime are: increased incarceration, environmental and social factors, proactive policing, social law enforcement programs. In my paper, I will delve into each of these theories and offer the positive and negative findings regarding each one.
