The famous Chinese philosopher, Confucius once said that “a good woman is an illiterate one” (Hays, 2015). This Confucian belief becomes the cornerstone of the patriarchal character of the ancient Chinese society. Patriarchy, according to londonfeministnetwork.org.uk (2018) refers to the unequal power relations among men and women wherein the latter are systematically oppressed and disadvantaged. In China for example, the lives of women from centuries ago were unbearable. They did not enjoy the status, both political and social, which are afforded to men. This situation is likewise clearly illustrated in the story “Old Man Xinjiang”.

This statement shows that the woman in the Chinese society is totally dependent to men about their survival in life. Women, on their own, could not get a living. When a woman bears a son, she gains more respect. Daughters were not preferred in Chinese families.
