In choosing a topic for this research paper, I had originally decided on the topic of Tibetan Buddhism. When I made that decision I had no idea how broad of a topic Tibetan Buddhism actually is. When it came down to starting research, I was overwhelmed with information. Soon, I realized that I wanted further my education and understanding of the Dalai Lama. So, I decided to focus directly on the topic of the Dalai Lama and where the title originated. In this paper I will cover for what reasons the Dalai Lama exists, the origins of the title and what issues arose in the creation of the office.

The 9th century in Tibet was characterized by treaties which created peace with China, the rise of religious leaders to high offices of government, and taxes being implemented to support the rapidly expanding population of monks. The majority of the population still followed the original shamanistic beliefs of the region, a prehistoric religion known as B?n. This created turmoil within the country since the population was being forced into allowing another new religion, Buddhism, expand and grow into the social and political life of the country. And with peace now existing between Tibet and China, turmoil within the country took hold.
