Dishonesty in The Cactus and Mere Christianity

The short story, “The Cactus” by O. Henry, is a perfect example of how great the consequences can be to such a trivial lie. The main character Trysdale is sitting before the alter at his ex- girlfriend’s wedding, and he is trying to figure out what went wrong in their relationship. The story flashbacks to a time where Trysdale lied to her about knowing how to speak Spanish just because he wanted to impress her. The ex- girlfriend then gives Trysdale a mysterious cactus that we find out later in the story had a the message attached that said “Come and take me” in spanish.

Lying is not always a good impulse, but at times people view it as necessary if telling the truth does a lot more damage. They lie all in an effort to protect their relationships.
