QUESTION: Given the nature of American diversity, explain the problems for presidential candidates assembling a winning coalition of voters?
Race and ethnicity, gender, social class, and education are all obstacles in a political system. A presidential candidate must overcome these obstacles in order to receive a majority of the votes. In order to gain the votes of America�s diverse population, a candidate must be aware of the issues that are important to each group.

while women seek a more compassionate candidate. In the 1996 presidential election, Bill Clinton focused part of his campaign on �soccer moms�. He stressed issues like women�s rights, child support, and sexual abuse and rape. The issues that Clinton raised were important to these mothers and they tended to cast their votes for him.
The diversity in social classes presents a difference in needs and beliefs. A basic premise of life is that everyone should be entitled to sufficient food, shelter, and clothing. Lyndon B. Johnson�s Great Society program that declared war on poverty was a start for the development of welfare programs in the United States. This program included aid to the aged, blind, and the disabled. It also provided for Medicare, food stamps, and unemployment compensation. Johnson�s campaign in these areas enabled him to gain the votes of a previously unheard of segment of the population.
