Abstract
Domestic violence has been around for as long as many cultures can remember, however, that's not an excuse for its continuance. Although some see women and children as mere property, their rights and safety should be protected. Whether they suffer from physical, sexual or emotional abuse, thankfully there are an increasing number of programs for these victims to turn to. These programs work hard to take the steps necessary for America to become a domestic violence-free society.

loved ones, for centuries in many cultures. Contemporary cultures today, which are immersed in ancient traditions, often find the tradition of domestic violence still prevalent in their society.
According to Wendy Mass, dowry issues are often a catalyst for domestic violence in these societies.
Some wives pay with their lives by having kerosene poured on them and ignited. The Indian government reports that between 1990 and 1996, over twenty thousand brides have been killed over dowry disputes and researchers believe this is a very low estimate. In fact, in greater Bombay, 25 percent of the girls who die between the age of fifteen and twenty-four are killed in this manner. (as cited in "History", n.d.)
