Hypothesis

It is hypothesized that when 4 year 12 students exercise for 2 minutes their heart rate, breathing rate and temperature will increase.

Purpose of the investigation

The purpose of this investigation focuses on homeostasis of the body. Heart rate, breathing/respiratory rate and temperature are each regulated to remain at a fairly constant level in order for the body to function at its optimum. The aim of this investigation is to see just how much only 2 minutes of exercise (light jogging) disrupts the normal resting rate of these three dimensions. this is called an increased heart rate. Both your breathing rate and heart rate increase due to an increased demand for oxygen in the muscles for respiration to take place. Carbon dioxide build up, caused by consumption of oxygen in muscles, lowers the pH of the blood, which is detected, and hormones are released to increase breathing rate. The increased rate of energy production during exercise often creates more heat than is necessary. This means your body has to somehow release this heat to prevent your temperature from becoming dangerously high. To maintain homeostasis, your body activates the sweating process and vasodilation, which helps remove the heat from your body and release it into the surrounding environment.
